Gallery Statement
The work of Maciej Gąsienica Giewont reflects his immense passion, love, and respect for the sculptural medium of wood.
His creations combine traditional craftsmanship techniques with a minimalist approach to object form, an emphasis on aesthetic refinement, and a profound sensitivity to and understanding of the nature and specificity of the material.
Collaboration and dialogue with nature and the sculptural medium thus become the cornerstone and a unique philosophy of the artist's work.
A distinctive feature of his practice is the use of moist sculptural material, which he skillfully turns into, notably, thin-walled objects. This has significant importance and influence, particularly during the final stage of creation, contributing to the unique final appearance of each piece.
The artist consciously simplifies his interventions, avoiding struggles with the material and refraining from imposing his vision on it.
He allows nature to fully resonate in his projects, becoming an equal co-creator of the artwork.
In line with this concept, the artist shapes the forms of his objects to highlight not only the natural qualities of the wood, such as the grain structure or color, but also its imperfections—knots, cracks, or discolorations. He perceives these as additional attributes, enriching the story of the object and giving it an unmatched, unique character.
He also embraces the natural processes of transformation and aging of the material.
This perfect symbiosis between the artist and nature resonates in the final, most unpredictable and enigmatic stage of the creative process.
Once the artist decides the piece is finished, he allows it to remain for some time under the influence of natural forces. These forces complete the work through a final act of transformation, wrinkling the material's texture, bending it, or creating small cracks and subtle color changes.
The resulting effects are always different, surprising, and unique, making Maciej Gąsienica’s objects truly one of a kind.
